Getting started

What does Kitna Hua do?

It keeps track of who paid for what on a trip or in a shared flat, and shows you one number: how much you owe, or how much you get back. People pay each other over UPI outside the app, and the app records that the debt is cleared.

Is there an app to download from the Play Store or App Store?

No. It's a web app. Open kitnahua.in in Chrome or Safari, log in, and add it to your home screen. From then on it opens full screen from its own icon, like any other app.

How do I add it to my home screen on an iPhone?

Open kitnahua.in in Safari (not Chrome), tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen. On an iPhone, notifications only work from the home screen icon, and the phone keeps the app's data more reliably that way too.

How do I add it to my home screen on Android?

In Chrome, open the three dot menu and tap Add to Home screen or Install app.

Which phones does it work on?

iPhones on iOS 16.4 or newer, and Android phones with Chrome 111 or newer. Older phones can still be on a trip: anyone else on the trip can log expenses for them.

Can I use it on a laptop?

It opens, but it stays phone sized in a column in the middle of the window. It's built to be used on a phone.

Do I need to sign up to join a friend's trip?

No. Open the invite link or join link the trip's admin sent you and pick a PIN there. Signing up is for people who want to run their own trips or flats. If you already signed up, tell the admin your number. They'll get a link to send you, and you're added to the trip when you open it.

What do I need to sign up?

Your name, your phone number, and a 6 digit PIN. An email is optional. We use it for one welcome email and to send you a PIN reset link when you ask. You start as an admin with no trips, and can create one straight away.

Does it handle other currencies?

No. Every amount is in Indian rupees.

Logging in and your account

How do I log in?

With your 10 digit Indian mobile number and your 6 digit PIN. There's no password and no SMS code.

I forgot my PIN. What do I do?

If someone invited you to their trip, ask them for a reset link from their console. It's the fastest way. If you run trips and saved an email on your account, go to kitnahua.in/forgot and we'll email you a link that works for an hour. Otherwise, write to hi@kitnahua.in with the number you log in with.

It says my number is locked. Why?

Five wrong PINs in a row lock logins for that number for 15 minutes, even with the right PIN. Wait it out and try again. Separately, one network can try 20 logins an hour.

How do I change my PIN?

Me tab, then PIN. Enter your current PIN and the new one twice. Any other phone logged into your account gets logged out.

How long do I stay logged in?

30 days on each phone. After that it asks for your PIN again.

How do I change my name or add my UPI ID?

Me tab, then Name and UPI ID. Admins can also add an email there for PIN resets.

Why should I add my UPI ID?

When someone owes you, their Pay over UPI button opens their UPI app with your ID and the amount already filled in. Without it they have to ask you for it.

Can I change my phone number?

There's no screen for it. Write to hi@kitnahua.in with your old and new numbers and we'll move your account over.

Someone else signed up with my number.

Signing up doesn't prove you own a number, so that account isn't trusted with trips yet. When an admin invites your number, opening their link sets your own PIN and logs everyone else out of the account. It keeps the name the other person typed, which you can change on the Me tab. If nobody is inviting you, write to hi@kitnahua.in.

I was invited to a trip. Can I run my own trips too?

Yes. On the Me tab, switch your account to admin. Your trips and balances stay as they are, and you can create trips from the console.

How do I delete my account?

Write to hi@kitnahua.in with the number on the account. We deactivate it and remove your phone number, UPI ID and email within 30 days. Expenses you were part of stay on the trip under your name, because everyone else's balances depend on them.

What happens when I log out?

The trip data saved on that phone is deleted. If some of your changes haven't reached the server yet, it asks before deleting them.

Trips, flats and people

What's the difference between a trip and a flat?

A trip has a start and end date, and its stats go day by day. A flat has only a start date, can hold bills that repeat every month, reads its stats by month, and sends a reminder at the end of each month to anyone who isn't square. You choose when you create it and can't switch later.

Who can create a trip?

Admins. Signing up makes you one, and anyone invited to a trip can switch to admin from the Me tab. Trips are created from the console, which you open from the Me tab.

How do I add people to my trip?

In the console, add a person with their name and number and send them the link it gives you. Or turn on a join link for the trip and share it, or its QR code, in your group chat.

Can someone be on the trip without the app?

Yes, as a guest. Anyone on a live trip can add one from Home with just a name, up to 20 a day. Whoever is dealing with the guest handles both sides of settling, since the guest can't confirm anything. A guest's person screen has a balance link they can open to see what they owe, and a claim link that turns them into a normal account with their history kept.

Can I be on more than one trip?

Yes. Switch between them from the top of Home. The switcher shows what you owe or get on each one, and Home points out other trips where you aren't square yet.

Can I remove someone from my trip?

The trip's owner can, from the console, once that person is square with everyone on the trip. Someone who still owes or is owed money can't be removed.

Can I leave a trip?

Not from the app. Settle up, then ask the trip's owner to remove you.

What does archiving a trip do?

Once everyone is square, the owner can archive it. It becomes read only and stays on everyone's phone, and it no longer counts toward the owner's plan. An archived trip can be unarchived if there's room on the plan for it.

Can I rename a trip or change its dates?

Not yet. The name and dates are set when the trip is created. The emoji and the budget can be changed from the trip's menu. Write to hi@kitnahua.in if a name or date needs fixing.

Can we set a budget?

The owner can set a budget per person from the trip's menu, such as ₹8,000 each. Home then shows your share of the spending against it, and how much is left or how far over you are.

Can I bring my balances over from Splitwise?

Yes. Export the group from Splitwise as a CSV file, create a trip with the same people, and open Import from Splitwise on its Home while the trip has no expenses. You match each Splitwise name to a person on the trip. Payments come in as expenses so the balances match. Only rupee groups can be imported.

Adding expenses

How do I add an expense?

Tap Add. Type the amount and what it was for. Who paid starts as you, and who shared it starts as everyone on the trip; change either if needed, then save. It saves even with no signal.

Can I add an expense that someone else paid for?

Yes. Anyone on the trip can log an expense for anyone, so one person can do the logging for the group. Only the person who paid can edit or delete it afterwards.

How can an expense be split?

Equally, by exact amounts, or by shares. Exact amounts have to add up to the total, and the form shows how much is still unassigned. Shares are ratios, so 2:1:1 means one person pays half and two pay a quarter each.

₹100 split three ways doesn't divide evenly. Who pays the extra paisa?

The person who paid. Two people owe ₹33.33 and the payer's own share is ₹33.34. Every phone works it out the same way.

Can I add up a bill in the amount box?

Yes. Type 480+120+60 and it saves ₹660.

Two of us paid for one bill. How do I log it?

As two expenses, one for each person's part of the payment. An expense has one payer.

Who can edit or delete an expense?

Only the person who paid it, and only until any share of it has been settled. The trip's owner can't edit other people's expenses either.

I can't edit an expense because a share is already settled.

Once any money on an expense is marked as paid, the expense is locked so the settled part can't change underneath anyone. Add a new expense for the difference instead.

Two of us logged the same thing.

Add warns you when someone else logged the same amount in the last 30 minutes, but it never stops the save. If both went in, whoever paid deletes one.

How do categories work?

Pick an emoji for the expense and the category follows from it. Trips use Food, Stay, Travel, Activity and Other. Flats use Rent, Utilities, Help, Groceries and Other. Categories feed the spending breakdown on Stats.

Is there a quick way to log something we buy every day?

Under the Add form, the last three expenses each have an Again button. It fills the form with that expense dated today, and you still tap Save. Same people as last time, at the top of the split list, ticks whoever shared the last expense.

We all put money into a kitty. How do we track it?

Whoever holds the cash logs each thing they buy from it as an expense they paid. Each person's contribution is recorded as a payment to the holder. At the end, the holder's balance shows whether money is left over or the kitty ran short, and the difference is settled like any other debt.

Can I attach a photo of the bill?

No. Expenses have an amount, a description and an optional emoji.

Can I get the expenses out as a spreadsheet?

Yes. At the bottom of Stats, Export every expense as CSV gives one row per expense with each person's share in its own column. It works offline.

Paying back and settling up

Who can mark a debt as paid?

Only the person who is owed the money. If you owe Rahul, you can say you've paid, but the debt clears when Rahul confirms it. This is the one rule the whole app is built around.

What happens when I tap I've paid?

The person you paid gets a request to confirm. Until they do, it shows as waiting. If they confirm, the debt is cleared. If they reject it, it goes back to what you owed before.

What's the difference between ticking off a share and settling up?

Whoever paid an expense can tick off one person's share of it, which suits paying back on the spot. Settling up clears everything between two people in one go and is the usual way at the end of a trip. Both are confirmed by the person who receives the money.

I paid back part of what I owe.

Record it as a part payment on that person's screen. It has to be less than the full amount, and they confirm it the same way. Only one payment between two people can wait for confirmation at a time.

Someone added an expense after I said I'd paid. Is it cleared too?

No. A settle-up covers exactly the expenses that existed when it was made, so anything added later is still owed.

How do I pay someone over UPI?

Open their screen from Home and tap Pay over UPI. It opens your UPI app with their ID and the amount filled in, if they've added a UPI ID. When you come back, the app asks whether the payment went through, and yes tells them you've paid.

Does Kitna Hua hold or move any money?

No. You pay each other with your own UPI apps or cash. The app only records what was paid. (Plans are paid to Kitna Hua through Cashfree, which is separate.)

What does Simplify debts show?

The fewest payments that would square up the whole group, for example one person paying two others instead of five people paying each other. It's a suggestion. Each payment still goes through the normal confirm step.

Can I remind someone who owes me?

Yes, with Remind on their screen. It sends them a notification once a day at most. It doesn't work for guests, for people who haven't turned notifications on, or while a payment from them is waiting for you to confirm.

Can I post the balances in our WhatsApp group?

Yes. The share button on Home sends a summary of who owes whom. It opens your phone's share sheet, or copies the text if it can't.

How do I settle with a guest?

You do both steps yourself. Marking a guest's share as paid, or a payment you make to a guest, counts as confirmed straight away.

Flats and monthly bills

How do bills that repeat every month work?

In a flat, turn on Repeats monthly when adding an expense, and pick the day of the month and the first month. Early in the morning on that day, India time, the bill is added as an ordinary expense, and everyone sharing it gets a notification with their share.

Who can set up or change a monthly bill?

The person who pays it, or the flat's owner. Tap it under Every month on Home to see its details, edit it, or stop it.

Our rent went up. How do I update it?

Edit the monthly bill. The change applies from the next month that hasn't been added yet. If this month's rent is already in at the old amount, edit that one expense.

How do we skip a month?

Delete that month's expense. It won't be added again for that month.

Our electricity bill is different every month.

Set it up as a monthly bill and leave the amount empty. On its day the person who pays it gets a reminder, and tapping it opens Add with everything filled in except the amount.

What if a bill is due on the 31st?

In shorter months it's added on the last day of the month, so 30 November and 28 February (29 in a leap year).

A flatmate is moving out.

They settle up first, then the owner removes them from the flat. They drop off every monthly bill from the next one. If a bill was split by exact amounts, their part moves to whoever pays it, so edit it if that's not right.

Someone new is moving in.

The owner adds them to the flat, then edits each monthly bill that should include them. Bills don't add new people by themselves.

What's the month end reminder?

In the evening on the last day of each month, everyone in a flat who isn't square gets one notification saying what they owe or are owed.

My phone was offline on rent day. Did the rent still go in?

Yes. Monthly bills are added on the server, never by a phone, so it's there dated the right day the next time your phone syncs.

No signal and syncing

Does it work without signal?

Yes, once it has been opened with signal on that phone. Adding, editing and settling all save on the phone and go to the server when you're back in range.

What's the small dot next to an expense?

It means the change is saved on your phone but hasn't reached the server yet. It goes away once it syncs.

How do I know everything has synced?

Home shows when it last synced, with a Refresh button. The Me tab shows how many changes are still waiting and has Sync now.

My change disappeared with a message. What happened?

The server refused it, and your phone put things back the way the server has them. The message says why, for example that only the payer can mark that share as paid, or that a share on the expense was settled in the meantime.

Two of us edited the same expense with no signal.

Whichever edit reaches the server last is kept. The other person sees a message saying who edited it.

I got a new phone.

Log in on it. Everything that reached the server downloads again.

A page says it isn't saved for offline use.

Pages are kept for offline use once you open them with signal. Open the app's main screens once while you have network before heading somewhere remote.

Notifications

How do I turn on notifications?

Me tab, under Notifications. On an iPhone this only works from the home screen icon, not a Safari tab. Turn them on separately on each phone you use.

What will I be notified about?

New expenses you have a share in, someone saying they paid you, your payment being confirmed, a share of yours being marked paid, reminders, monthly bills being added, and, for trip owners, people asking to join. Edits and deletes don't send anything; the activity feed on Home lists them.

Can I mute one trip?

Yes. Me tab, Notifications, Trips. Each trip you're on has its own switch, and muted trips send you nothing.

I'm not getting notifications.

Check that they're allowed for the app in your phone's settings, that on an iPhone you're using the home screen icon, and that battery saver isn't holding them back. The Me tab has a button to send yourself a test. Balances never depend on a notification arriving.

Plans and payments

Is it free?

Yes for most groups. A free account can run one live trip and one live flat at a time, each with up to 6 people counting you. Being added to someone else's trip is always free.

Do the people on my trip have to pay?

No. Plans only apply to the person who owns the trip or flat.

What counts as a live trip?

One you own that isn't archived. Archiving a finished trip frees the slot, and trips other people own never count.

What does the ₹99 trip pass do?

It unlocks one trip: no limit on people, and it doesn't use up your free trip. It stays on that trip for good, including after archiving and unarchiving. Passes are for trips only, not flats. You buy one from the trip's menu in the console.

What does the ₹499 annual plan do?

Any number of live trips and flats with no limit on people, for 12 months from the day you pay. Buy it from the plan card on the console's Trips tab.

What happens when my annual plan runs out?

Nothing is locked or deleted, and every trip keeps working for the people on it. You go back to the free limits for anything new: you can't start another trip while you have a live one without a pass, or add a 7th person to a trip without a pass.

How do I pay?

Through Cashfree's checkout page, which opens from the console. Kitna Hua never sees your card or bank details.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 7 days of paying. Write to hi@kitnahua.in with the number on your account and you get the full amount back. It reaches the account you paid from in 5 to 7 working days.

Do prices include tax?

Yes. The price you see is what you pay, charged in rupees.

Privacy

Who can see my phone number?

Not the other people on your trip. The admin who invited you can see it in their console.

Who can see a trip's expenses?

Everyone on that trip sees all its expenses and balances. Nobody else does.

Can admins see trips they aren't on?

Only the ones they own. An admin can't see other admins' trips or the people on them.

Can anyone see my PIN?

No. It's stored in a form that can't be turned back into the PIN, so nobody, including the admin and us, can read it.

Do you sell my data?

No, and it isn't shared for advertising. The privacy page lists every service that stores it.

Still stuck?

Write to hi@kitnahua.in with the number you log in with and what you were trying to do. Replies come within 2 working days.
