Switching from Splitwise

Bring your trip over with its balances

Kitna Hua reads the CSV Splitwise exports for a group and turns it into a trip here. Everyone's balance ends up where Splitwise left it, so you can switch halfway through a trip.

You need
An empty trip in Kitna Hua
splitwise.com in a browser
Rupees only

Six steps

One is on splitwise.com. The rest happen in Kitna Hua.

  1. 1

    Kitna Hua console

Set the trip up here first

Whoever runs your trip creates it in Kitna Hua and adds everyone who was in the Splitwise group. Leave it empty. The import only runs on a trip with no expenses, so nothing gets counted twice.

  2. 2

    splitwise.com

    Export the group from Splitwise

Open splitwise.com in a browser and go to the group. In its settings, choose Export as spreadsheet. The Splitwise phone app has no export, so this part needs the website. You get a CSV file.

  3. 3

    WhatsApp or email

Get the file where you'll import it

Send it to yourself and save it to your phone's files. Or import from the laptop you exported on, since Kitna Hua runs in any browser. Don't open and re-save the file in Excel or Numbers first, because that can rewrite the dates.

  4. 4

    Kitna Hua, Home

Pick the file in Kitna Hua

Open the trip. While it has no expenses, Home shows Import from Splitwise. Tap it and pick the CSV. Anyone on the trip can do this.

  5. 5

    Kitna Hua, Import

    Match the names

Each name in the Splitwise group needs a person on the trip. Most are filled in from the names already. Fix any that are wrong, then tap Import.

  6. 6

    Kitna Hua, Home

    Check the number

Home now shows what you owe or get back, and it should match your Splitwise balance for the group. Everyone else sees the expenses on their next sync. Nobody gets a notification for each one.

What comes across

  • Every expense, with its date, description, amount, who paid and each person's share. Shares come in as exact amounts.
  • Categories where Kitna Hua has one: Dining out and Groceries become Food, Hotel and Rent become Stay, Taxi, Plane, Bus/train and the other transport ones become Travel, and Entertainment, Sports, Games, Movies and Music become Activity. Everything else comes in without a category.
  • Payments already made in Splitwise come in as an expense from the person who paid to the person who got the money. That keeps balances right, but Stats counts them as trip spending.
  • An expense that two people paid for comes in as one expense per payer, so each person's balance still matches.

Receipts, comments and notes aren't in Splitwise's export, so they stay behind.

What stops an import

After the move

Add new expenses in Kitna Hua only. Anything added to Splitwise after the export stays in Splitwise.

You can leave the Splitwise group as it is. Its balances just stop being the ones that count.

Settle the trip, not the argument

Invite only. Ask whoever runs your trip for a link or their QR code, or request access and run trips of your own.
